60 Young People, One Journey of Growth: CRE Completes Mentorship

Helping young people understand themselves, strengthen their mindset, and take greater ownership of their future.

Community Raise Echoes (CRE) has successfully completed a mentorship program supporting 60 young people from College Amahoro de Kiziba in Kiziba Refugee Camp, Rwanda.

Over the course of the program, students had the opportunity to learn, reflect, ask questions, share experiences, and engage directly with mentors around practical topics designed to support their personal and academic development.

And the result was encouraging: 96% of participating students reported being impacted by the mentorship program.

But for CRE, the most important outcome is not simply the percentage. It is the possibility that these young people leave the program with a stronger understanding of themselves and greater confidence in shaping their future.

Creating Space for Young People to Grow

Adolescence is a critical period of development. Young people are making decisions about their education, relationships, goals, and future while navigating challenges that can sometimes make it difficult to see beyond the present.

CRE's mentorship program was designed to create a supportive space where students could pause, reflect, learn, and engage with mentors who could offer guidance and practical perspectives.

The program focused on skills and ideas that students can carry with them far beyond the classroom.

Understanding Self-Awareness

Students explored self-awareness and the importance of understanding their strengths, values, emotions, behaviors, and areas for growth.

Self-awareness can be a powerful foundation for making better decisions. Before young people can effectively determine where they want to go, they need opportunities to understand who they are.

Developing a Growth Mindset

One of the central conversations focused on fixed and growth mindsets.

Students explored how the way we think about our abilities can influence how we respond to challenges, mistakes, and opportunities to learn.

Rather than viewing difficulties as proof that they cannot succeed, students were encouraged to see challenges as opportunities to learn, improve, and develop.

The goal was not simply to tell students to “think positively,” but to help them understand that abilities can be developed through learning, effort, persistence, and reflection.

Personal Development

The mentorship sessions also introduced students to practical concepts around personal development.

Students were encouraged to think about their goals, identify areas where they want to improve, and consider the habits and choices that can move them toward the future they envision.

These conversations helped connect personal growth with everyday decisions.

Prioritization and Time Management

Students also learned about prioritization and time management—skills that are especially important as young people balance school, family responsibilities, personal interests, and future goals.

Through these discussions, students were encouraged to think about how they use their time, distinguish between urgent and important tasks, and make intentional choices about what deserves their attention.

96% Impact: A Sign of What Is Possible

At the conclusion of the program, 96% of participating students reported that the mentorship program had an impact on them.

This result gives CRE encouragement to continue investing in mentorship and youth development.

For us, however, impact is more than a number.

It is the student who begins to understand their strengths.

It is the young person who realizes that a setback does not define their ability to succeed.

It is the student who learns to manage their time more intentionally.

It is the young person who begins thinking differently about their goals and future.

These are small changes that can become meaningful steps toward long-term personal development.

Learning Through Connection

An important part of the program was the opportunity for students to engage directly with mentors.

Mentorship creates something that traditional classroom learning cannot always provide: a space for young people to ask questions, hear different perspectives, discuss real-life experiences, and connect what they are learning to their own lives.

CRE believes that young people should not only have access to information. They should also have access to people who can listen, guide, encourage, and help them see possibilities.

A Successful Completion—and a Beginning

Completing this mentorship program is an important milestone for Community Raise Echoes.

But we see it as a beginning rather than an ending.

The experience has strengthened our commitment to expanding youth mentorship opportunities in the years ahead.

Our goal is to reach more students, more schools, and more young people with mentorship opportunities that support personal development, confidence, leadership, and future readiness.

As the program grows, CRE hopes to build a broader network of mentors, educators, community partners, and supporters who believe in the potential of young people.

Looking Toward the Future

The future of any community is closely connected to the opportunities available to its young people today.

CRE believes that investing in youth means investing not only in academic success but also in confidence, mindset, self-awareness, leadership, decision-making, and the ability to envision a future beyond current circumstances.

The successful completion of this program has shown us what can happen when young people are given a supportive environment to learn, reflect, and grow.
